LECTURE

Week 2 : Introduction to composition

How to start with composition

1. Find the focal point. It helps viewers' eyes naturally settle on the important pieces of the design.
2. Scale is often used to help communicate hierarchy by drawing attention toward and away from certain elements
3. Balance the elements. Think of each element as having 'weight' to it.
4. Utilise white space ( known as empty space) to balance up the main focus of a composition. It boost design clarity and overall look.

Rule of thirds

The Rule of Thirds is the process of dividing an image into thirds, using two horizontal and two vertical lines. This imaginary grid yields nine parts with four intersection points.

Golden Ratio

The Golden Ratio is a mathematical ratio. It is commonly found in nature, and when used in a design, it fosters organic and natural-looking compositions that are aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

TASK

Week 2 :
This week, we continued with the physical collage in class. After lecture on basic composition, I have clearer idea on my composition. Before I start, I choose the photograph to make as focal point. Next, I choose the theme as 'nature' as it is easier to find necessary photos in the magazines.

After submission, Mr Fauzi selected the best composition for project 1. I also like composition 1 the most, because, the woman was eye catching and utilised the white space the most effectively.

REFLECTION

I took long time to find suitable elements from the magazines. Before the lecture, I was lost and suffered to make the arrangement, because whatever I made, it looks messy and confusing, After the lesson, I learnt about white spaces and how to minimized the elements used. I was overthinking why preparing the photos.
