LECTURE

Week 6 :Poster Design

The fundamental principles of design are: Emphasis, Balance and Alignment, Contrast, Repetition, Proportion, Movement and White Space.

The 7 principles of poster design
  1. Emphasis
  2. Balance and alignment
  3. Contrast : Contrast creates space and difference between elements in design. Background needs to be significantly different from the colour of the elements so they work harmoniously together and are readable.
  4. Repetition
  5. Proportion : the visual size and weight of elements in a composition and how they relate to each other.
  6. Movement :controlling the elements in a composition so that the eye is led to move from one to the next and the information is properly communicated to the audience. It creates the story or the narrative of your work.
  7. White Space ( Negative space)

TASK

Recolouring Part A

For the first exercise, we used brush tools  for the recolouring. For granny's skin colour, I picked up the brown colour, and painted the face. Then, apply overlay layer to make it brighter, and make further adjustment with hue & saturation.
Fig 1.1
Similar for the hair colour, I painted with purple colour and apply soft light filter. In hue & saturation, i can make changes in colour, so I turned the colour into bluish purple.

Fig 1.2
Similar to fig 1.1 and fig 1.2, I used same process for the rest of the recolouring ( lips, eyes, background)

Recolouring Part B

This exercise, I picked up the hair and skin colour using the colour picker.

This time we learnt, selected mask function, which allow to mask the area in detail. Using the selected mask, I masked out the face. Then, apply the skin colour using 'solid colour' layer, and adjust the the intensity using curve.

Similar process went through for Fig 2.3.

After adding the background colour, I am completed with recolouring process.

REFLECTION

I enjoyed colouring the black images. I find that it is easier to colour using the brush tool, and edit the small adjustment. Using the selected mask tool, I can mask the hair in detail. By learning the photo editing techniques, I have more confident to edit my own photographs, even changing the colours.
