Task 2 : Typographic Exploration & Communication

Week 6
Research

Before I start with layout exploration, I research different text formatting in the pinterest, and save the designs that I could work on.

Fig 1.1 Reference Board ( 7/5/2023)

Exploration

After the research, I draw on the Ipad and explore various type formatting, together with word expression. I want to focus on either " Unite " or "Visualise ". For 'Unite', my basic idea is connecting all the words with lines , and for 'Visualise', I want to make reflection of the words.

Layout

After the idea sketch, I cannot decide which headline design would be worked, thus, I digitalised using Adobe Illustrator for further exploration.

Fig 1.3 Exploration (8/5/2023)

Personally, I think that First 3 designs are workable. Fourth is not easy to express the idea 'excavator', and I rethink that the idea is not relevant to the text. For first and second, I used Futura Std in different medium, and I find that second works the best.

Fig 1.4 Exploration (8/5/2023)

I find that it is unnecessary to stretch letter ' U ', because it does not express uniting the words. Instead, I added the stroke to align letter 'T' and 'L'.

Fig 1.5 Exploration (8/5/2023)
I feel challenging for alignment for letter 'A'. I aligned letter 'a' into the stroke, however it seems like 'd'.
When I changed letter to grey, it does not harmonised with other text, and it is outstanding. Hence, I decided to stick with first design.

Next, I placed the headline into Adobe InDesign, and place the text.
My idea is uniting the all words with one line, so I added the lines next to the sub-headlines to express that both headlines and body texts are connected.

After exploring, I decided to work on number 1 design because

This is the first draft of task 2 :

Fig 1.7 Task 2 draft ver 1 (11/5/2023)

I did not make much adjustment for adjusting ragging and kerning due to time management.

Week 7 :
I decided to stick with first layout, but removing unnecessary line on right.

Next, I adjust the body to show smoother ragging.

Fig 1.8 Layout (29/5/2023)

I faced difficulty for Fig 1.9, because the ragging is not smooth no matter how I force-paragraphing and adjust kerning. Thus, I decided to turn on hyphenation, which is not recommended. As a result, I was managed to produce smoother ragging.

Fig 1.9 Progression (17/5/2023)

I decided to explore more for headlines. I decided to replace letter ' T ' to symbol ' +' , to express unite as adding. However, I find that the stroke of ' + ' is thicker than other letters, thus it is challenging to harmonise the overall text. Instead, I change the colour of letter ' t ' into lighter grey.
I decided to touch on ' Visualise ' as well. Referring to my original idea, I added reflection under the words, expressing reflection.

Fig 1.10 Head line expression (17/5/2023)

When I place the image into the text body, I feel that the headline is packed and right side seems empty, so I decided to push the title to the left and separate ' Visualise ' to right. As a result, the shadow of the ' Visualise ' is more visible as compared to the previous design.

FEEDBACK

Week 6 :
General Feedback: Justified gap, at least 5mm, be carful of hyphenation, using different font for title fails to communicate with reader. To create impression, do not extravagant, need to find the simplest ways.

Specific Feedback: acceptable title design, move the title to the left a little bit, the lines on the right seem unnecessary, working with kerning and leading more.

Week 7:

Specific Feedback : Good job.

REFLECTION

Experience
I enjoyed this task, exploring different type formatting from the magazines, and interesting headline designs. Some of the layouts are designed with headline and body text to express its meaning. I was to excited to start with this task, so I took a lot of time to explore the type expression and leads to failure of time management. Unfortunately, I was not able to develop on body text layout more interesting.

Observation
Throughout the process, I found that there are many options of the placement of the body texts. For me, I only place them right side, however, when I looked at other classmates progress, they placed the body text to different place, which give for rhythm and interesting layout. Next time, I should think further more of the placement,

Findings
I found that minimalist design might work better than complicated design. At first, I found my type expression seems simple as compared to other classmates work, because I only play with stroke for the expression. However, sometimes simple design, focusing on on words might give stronger impression and more outstanding.

FURTHER READING

Fig 2.1 Cover Page(10/5/2023)

I borrowed this book from Taylors Library because it contains information about system compositing of the text using axis and grid.Mostly it used diagram and grid line to align the headlines, and it leads to create interesting layout.

Fig 2.2 examples of Radial axis(10/5/2023)

Fig 2.3 examples of Radial system (10/5/2023)

One of the good examples of this book is, it provides diagram and actual works for the audience to compare. When I tried path alignment tool in Adobe Illustrator, it was challenging to composite them neatly. A comparison between guide lines and final outcome give clearer vision on using the path tool. Similar to image composition, it used focal point before layering the text and images.

Fig 2.3 examples Modular system (10/5/2023)

Although, we cannot use many graphic elements, exploring different diagram with its opacity and overlapping create interesting layout. It seems like messy if we put too many elements, but personally, I think it attracts the attention and easy to read the text as the digram highlights the sentences.

Overall, I think I need to use more guide lines in order to plan for the type expression. My bad habit is I go into digitalisation without any plan, and make the changes while I am working. That could be the reason when I work with path alignment, the outcome is not good as my expectation.
