Week 1

This week we get the brief about the major project 2. Basically, we need to execute the campaign that we proposed during major project 1. For my job, I need to create advertise motion graphic and 3D mock up for campaign booth. After the class, we discussed about the design of the 3D mock up, and we decided to create a stack of cube booth, inspired from the shape of rabbit r1 device and the minimalistic design direction.

Based on our ideas, I sketch out the stack of cube booth and placed the rabbit r1 character head on the top to attract the attention. Also, I used different sized of cube to give fun.

I find that the surrounding is bit empty, so I added playground elements, inspired from the official website and the functions "LAM Playground"

Based on the layout, I did a simple mock up in Blender to present to group mates and supervisor for better visualisation.

Week 2

This week, I start working on motion graphic. Based on the last time feedback, our motion graphic is not fit to fun theme, lack of communication and "push to talk" button is not that interesting features.

We discussed what features to highlight, and decided three functions :

1. push to talk button ( speak directly to the device)
2. LAM ( order food or play favourite music at once)
3. Camera ( identify the object and privacy camera)

I did research for some motion graphic, and found this advertisement video. The character's stretch in and out looks fun, and utilising the human character is easier to communicate with the audience,

Fig 1.7 reference video

So I redraw the storyboard, utilising the human character.

I refer to the official website graphic design. They usually used geometric shape and minimalistic design.

Week 3

After the discussion, we decided to add 3D screen to advertise rabbit r1 device. Also, placed the cubes around to promote the functions of the device and qr code that linked to website.

Also, I started to work on the intro part of the motion graphic. First, I create vector image of the rabbit r1 device, and import it into After effect.

Then, I add the text layer and apply different text animation to give fun mood.

Week 4

Group members disagreed with the character animation and wanted to focus on the rabbit character. They suggested to show the inside world of the rabbit r1 device, and use the speech bubble to show communication between the users and rabbit. Hence, I redo the storyboard to fulfil their requirement.

Also, they comment that the hand vector on the intro part is weird, and suggested to zoom in to the device. For this part, we asked feedback from our supervisor, and he prefer the second idea.

Week 5

I need to focus on 3D mock up because they want to 3D print it out for the presentation. For the mock up, I used blender to build up. I started with building up the rabbit r1 device shape photobooth.

Process of building the rabbit r1 device shape booth :

Import the reference image from the website

Fig 1.20 process of building up photobooth 1

Used insert loop edge and create edges according to the reference.

Delete the faces for entrance, camera and wheel.

Used the bevel to create curved edges.

Then I used the cubes to build up the booth mock up. I had a 2 variation for the booth, and show it to group mates for their opinion.

Week 6

During the consultation, mr asrizal choose first booth design, and utilise the walkway on the left for the merch display. We agreed on that idea, and decided to display rabbit r1 case and rabbit figures.

Also, I added the rabbit r1 device for better visualisation of 3D screen

Fig 1.30 second attempt of 3d model

As the model seems finalised, I proceed with the motion graphic. Based on week 4 feedback, I made a necessary changes.

Week 7

Texturing

After proved by group mates, I started with the texturing. I request Jeremy for the graphic designs for the top cubes and motion graphic cubes, and Gim khoon and Khye qing worked for the stack of cubes design.

I start with UV cut for the each elements.

Fig 1.33

Then exported it into psd file and edit it in photoshop

Fig 1.34

For the lighting, I used hdri haven, I choose urban lighting because the venue for our campaign is at trx mall.

Fig 1.35

After texturing, I rendered the image for poster design. Discuss with Jeremy for the camera position.
It takes almost one hour to render.

Also, Gim khoon and Khye qing used adobe aero to test AR.

Fig 1.39 AR test

We also went to maker space to print out. However, we encounter two problems. Some models got gaps in between and the one cube takes 29 hours to print out. Hence, I need to refine the model by merging it to remove the gap, and slice each cubes and make it hollow to save time.

Fig 1.40 3d print error

Fig 1.41 slicing the 3d model

Fortunately, the solution reduced to 10 hours, and we are able to proceed for printing.

Fig 1.42 3d printing 1

Fig 1.43 3d printing 2

Meanwhile, I continued to work on motion graphic as well. This time, Gim Khoon wants to change the device to real pictures and change the white background to gradient orange. I separate the device pictures and add gradient for orange background to prevent blend with the device.

Week 8

We added kiosk and rabbit r1 signboard for the mock up. We discussed about the placement of the objects, considering the pathway and queues.

Also, I need to create social media highlight videos. To save time, I recycled the motion graphic, and created 15 seconds videos each. This time, we remove the zoom into the rabbit r1 device.

FEEDBACK

Week 1
-
Week 2
Good

Week 3
Playground elements are not necessary

Week 4
Can remove the hand vectors for motion graphic.

Week 5
Can add the merch display for the empty walkway.

Week 6
Add the floor for the 3d booth

Week 7
Looks good and almost done

Week 8
More squeeze and stretch for motion graphic
Consider the view point of the 3D screen
When build the booth, compare with the actual human size
When preparing the campaign, we need to think how we should appeal the product to the guests, to think why they should buy the product.

REFLECTION

This major project is the largest project that I did, and creating both motion graphic and 3d was challenging and rush with deadline. At first I was stuck with motion graphic and changed storyboard several times, but with continuous discussion and feedbacks, I was able to finish the motion graphic and 3d booth on time. Collaborate with different specialization is really good experience, and learnt the importance of the teamwork. I realised that designing the campaign needs many consideration, such as how to attract guests' attention, what kind of content will interest and consider them to purchase the product. Our works could not say perfect in terms of attraction and marketing, but we put our skills and efforts to make the major project success.
